After the SFMOMA guerrilla installation, a three-part series attempting to bring photographs back into painting 'didn't all work out' — followed by writing ~30 ideas about art, which became the seed of the Breaking Down Art series.1996, right before leaving for Europe: a recurring refusal to fully render or engage the thing you were about to leave. The SFMOMA action hung a bronze figure turned away from the museum; Antiquity, painted the same year, left its Acropolis a white ghost rather than a rendered building. Both readable as the same gesture at different scales — institution and tradition — right at the threshold of departure.
