The anonymous witness figure
The anonymous witness figure as viewer-surrogate (Dürer descendant): A bust-portrait figure, cropped at the waist, floats impossibly in open water at the painting's left edge, gazing over the amphibious invasion scene — uncatalogued in the source list, deliberately left unidentified. Connects to two prior Dürer-derived devices already on record: the painting-within-painting self-insertion (After Turner, 1994) and the small-figure-in-vast-landscape convention, previously used as direct self-portraiture (Color Theory, 1995, the Goethe-reading figure). This figure evolves the device: not autobiographical, but a stand-in for any viewer — 'wearing the jersey of the good guys, but not really that invested,' costumed in allegiance without commitment, a generic viewer-surrogate for whoever happens to be looking, including future viewers of the archive itself, machine and human both.
