this is an older work, a small drawing from my travels around europe. not part of a specific series, but just part of drawings in general
- Art/Official
A travel drawing — makes sense as its own thing. Where were you when you made this one?
- Artist
Its about amsterdam so I think when I was first out there around 1998
- Art/Official
Good — so this one predates the Rietveld years by a few years. Where were you physically sitting when you drew it — Amsterdam itself, or somewhere else?
- Artist
predates even the art school in utrecht, I would save up money and travel aroudn europe as far as I could go. so I must have been in amsterdam for this one, probably sitting on one of the benches on the canal there, that I always loved to chill on
- Art/Official
Sitting on a canal bench in Amsterdam, late 90s, before any of the formal training — that's a clear moment. Before you upload — describe this work to me first, before either of us sees it. I'll ask you again later once we've talked it through, and we'll look at both together at the end. There's no right way to do this — however it comes is exactly right.
- Artist
this is a small drawing of a street scene in Amsterdam, I called it Mokum Straat, a little bit funky with some trippy characters and some of the one line work I would do around then
- Art/Official
*Mokum Straat* — good title. Go ahead and upload when you're ready.
- Artist
I have uploaded the primary artwork image.

No match in the legacy records — this one wasn't on the old site, which makes sense for a travel sketchbook piece from '98. The image is clear. I can see the canal perspective pulling back through the middle, the dense angular buildings on the right with that domed cap, and then the figures — the ones in the foreground are much looser, almost dissolving into pure line. There's a real shift in register between the architectural part and those bottom figures. What were you drawing with here — pen, pencil, both?
- Artist
this is with pen on paper and on a piece of paper from a small sketch book almost postcard size
- Art/Official
Tiny format for something that cramped so much of the city into it. The one-line figures you mentioned — was that a technique you were consciously developing at the time, or just how your hand moved when you were drawing fast?
- Artist
yeah, I experimented with that even in some of the older oil paintings, but in these first travels to europe was sketching with it quite a bit
- Art/Official
So it was already part of your mark-making language before the formal training — good to know the oil paintings carried it too. What does "Mokum" mean to you — is that something you picked up while you were there, or did you find it later?
- Artist
its the old jewish name of amsterdam
- Art/Official
That's a specific choice — using the old Jewish name for the city rather than Amsterdam. Was that a deliberate nod to the history of the place, or did it just feel like the right word for what you were drawing?

- Artist
I think I felt like an insider when I learned that name and liked it, mayve not to do with the jewish part, even though that is a big history in amsterdam, but just to learn that there was another older name, and it was cool
- Art/Official
That insider feeling — arriving somewhere as a traveler and finding a name that locals use, not the one on the map. It gives the title a different weight than just "Amsterdam Street." Let's get the basics logged. You said around 1998 — is that your best estimate for when this was made?
- Artist
yes, possibly 1997
- Art/Official
I'll note circa 1997–1998 then. And the medium — pen on paper, from a small sketchbook, roughly postcard size. Do you have a rough sense of the dimensions, or should we measure it?
- Artist
like hand size, a typical small sketch book, maybe it was in europe when I bought it, so probably a6
- Art/Official
A6 is 105 × 148mm — that tracks with what you're describing. I'll work with that unless you measure it differently.
- Art/Official
At A6 — roughly 105 × 148mm — this would read as small on the site grid. Does that feel right, or would you want it to read slightly larger?
- Artist
should be small, even thinking of making an extra small size
- Art/Official
Noted — sm it is for now, and worth flagging if an xs tier gets added later.
