Intent

Conceived as the first in a planned series of videos tracing the artist's path to European art school. Episode One covers the origin — the 1998 preliminary entrance exam at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam — as the logical starting point for the story. Further episodes were planned but not yet made.

Formal contribution

A first-person video monologue that operates on two levels simultaneously: a straightforward oral history of how Bolter got into art school in Europe, and a more concentrated inquiry into what it means to destroy your own work as an act of forward motion. The formal contribution is modest by design — the piece uses basic filmmaking (camera dialogue, b-roll) learned in class, applied without stylistic ambition. What distinguishes it is the structural decision to withhold the destruction until the narrative earns it, and the unscripted closing reflection that steps back to consider the act's meaning mid-story. The Baldessari parallel, discovered accidentally the night before the screening, gives the work an unexpected art-historical resonance it did not set out to claim.
